3D Geological Modeling for Manitoba Hydro's Conawapa Generating Station

As part of Stage IV design studies for the proposed Manitoba Hydro Conawapa Generating Station, KGS Acres (Sherko Sharif) and Manitoba Hydro (G.N. Cook) created a comprehensive 3D geology model. The process involved compiling all available information, including historical data from legacy file formats — and addressing Conawapa's unique site location, geology, and groundwater conditions, as well as challenges related to amassing data collected over many years of investigations. The 3D geological model was compiled in Earth Volumetric Studio, while the hydrogeological model was compiled in FEFLOW (Finite Element Flow by DHI-WASY). Together, these tools consolidated and improved the designer's ability to visualize all available geological and geotechnical information, assist with evaluating and improving confidence in the design, and provide input for environmental studies. The project also addressed the challenges of translating the 3D geological model into its equivalent form for groundwater simulation purposes.Read the Technical Paper (PDF)
